Spain, known for its various initiatives, has reportedly begun designing a large language model based on artificial intelligence, aligning with the current trend. The Prime Minister of the country, Pedro Sanchez, announced on the eve of this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona that the project would encompass not only Spanish but also many local languages.
Sanchez also stated that the model would be completely transparent and open source, adding that this initiative would be a significant milestone for the country’s technological development. Here are all the details…
Spain catches up with the artificial intelligence trend
Given that many large language models focus primarily on the English language, this initiative by Spain holds significant promise for Spanish-speaking cultures. Moreover, it is expected that other countries will also begin working on artificial intelligence models speaking their own native languages. Highlighting the importance of artificial intelligence technologies, Sanchez emphasized that these technologies would play an even more critical role in human rights and public services in the future.
For this project, the Spanish government will collaborate extensively with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, the Spanish Supercomputing Network, and the Spanish Language Academy, aiming to include Spanish-speaking communities, especially in South America, in this project.
Additionally, praising Barcelona’s inclination towards technological initiatives, Sanchez expressed confidence that Spain would catch up with the digital revolution. At the end of the day, we hope that all these developments will be beneficial for societies.
